Little Gems, an exhibition of acrylic and mixed-media paintings by both Dadashzadeh and Chaney, runs at the Beaumont Studios [316 West 5th Avenue, Vancouver] until May 3. The Straight spoke with Dadashzadeh by phone about her art. What do you like about abstract painting? I like the idea of being able to access that inner child by just playing and giving in to your intuition and allowing some of the impulses to come through. What is the key to doing it well? The key is allowing a lot of mistakes to happen.If you have fear then you cannot be successful. How does your creative process work? I notice that I get inspired a lot by the seasonal colours.I start with colour and from then on I work with the composition and different shapes and then at the very end I really play with the idea of letting go and then getting into that childlike mindset where you just grab a pencil and then you just doodle.The Province: Little Gems by Hans OngsansoyExhibits Little Gems Where: Beaumont Studios, 316 W. 5th Ave. Why: I often dont know what is abstract art and what is abstract, um, not-art. Art StatementRound Lake Series is an exploration of tex/t/ile-based abstract landscape drawings and paintings inspired by a trip to Northern Ontario. In juxtaposing unconventional materials (thread, fabric, and hand-made paper) with conventional drawing and painting materials (graphite, watercolour, acrylic and mix mediums), I am exploring the boundaries between what is stereotypically considered art and what is craft.I am repurposing natural thread and fabric, which come from the natural environment and carry with them their own memories and stories of the land, to explore my own memory of it: fragmented and uncertain. I do this using layers, spontaneity and control.notesTextile: from the Latin Texere (to weave)Etymology of text: An ancient metaphor: thought is a thread, and the raconteur (storyteller) is a spinner of yarnsbut the true storyteller. The scribes made this old and audible abstraction into a new and visible fact. After long practice, their work took on such an even, flexible texture that they called the written page a textus, which means cloth. [Robert Bringhurst, "The Elements of Typographic Style"].

Bio

Rojia is a Vancouver–based artist. She was born in Iran and moved to Ontario at age eighteen. . She holds an honours degree in Fine Arts from the University of Waterloo, a post-graduate degree in Web and Graphic Design from Sheridan and Le Grand Diploma in cuisine and pastry from Le Cordon Bleu Paris. Rojia has worked for numerous Vancouver based companies from Studio B Productions animation company to Coastal Jazz and Blues Vancouver International Jazz Festival. In 2006 she was granted the best poster design award by Granville Island for the new Olympic 2010 winter art festival, Winterruption. In 2007 she moved to Paris to attend one of the most prestigious culinary schools in the world. In Oct 2008 she was chosen to work with the Prime Minister’s private chef for a government function in Ottawa. In August 2008 She represented Canada on Canada day in Trafalgar Square, London, England. Upon her return to Canada in December 2009 she was offered to create greeting cards for a major national Canadian distributor and she is in the process of making 100 designs. Rojia is currently represented by two galleries in Toronto, Art Interiors and Canvas Gallery. She is also an active Vancouver Culture Crawl participant and teaches painting workshops in Vancouver. Her work is in many private collections in Vancouver, Toronto, Tehran, Oslo, California and Portland.

From Start to Finish: Abstract Painting Workshop in Acrylics & Mixed Media- With Rojia DadashzadehEach participant will experience working on three wood panels as we take you on a creative journey sharing our art making process with you from start to finish. Students will be encouraged to explore language, colour, composition, nurture emotional richness, spontaneity and experimentation and to develop conceptual ideas. A slide show presentation of modern art will be given with discussion and emphasis on composition, balance, colour, form, symbolism,the representation of motion ,and the superimposition of images in the organization of space in abstract paintings.Both one-on-one and group critiques are aimed at enhancing individual growth. Media will include heavy body acrylics, mixing and pouring mediums, moulding pastes and gels, and professional grade MSA or Polymer Varnish. Various materials and mediums, for example, coloured pencil, crayon, and inks will be introduced and used to experiment with different techniques during the process. If yes, this workshop is for you!In this fun one-day workshop students will learn:Introduction to different types of colour pigments and their variations.Learning colour names and terminologies.Learning the fundamentals of colour mixing techniques and process as well as documentation for future reference.Developing an in-depth colour scheme reference booklet perfect for future projects.Exploiting the relationship between colours and colour schemes.Different ways of colour application.How to use the colour chart to achieve the colour of your choice.Learning techniques for how to preserve colours that have been made in advance for use in future projects and works in progress.Students will complete a valuable colour reference booklet, start off a colour mixing journal, and explore a painting on panel studying one of the colour schemes of their choice.Materials list will be posted here shortly.Beginner and experienced artists are both encouraged to take this workshop.For dates and rates see Dates and Rates
